Borovets vs. The Alps
This article is about the differences between Borovets & The Alps but I'm sure would apply equally to any Eastern Europe destination vs. Western Europe / Canada etc.
BOROVETS IS NOT THE ALPS
I've lost count of the number of posts on skiing forums where people complain about the skiing / resort / whatever & then attempt a comparison between a holiday they payed double the amount for.
- Borovets has 58km of marked pistes & 21 lifts.
- Val d'Isere has 300km of marked pistes & 94 lifts.
Borovets is cheap, cheerful & great for the young & young at heart. It's also great for families as a place to learn and cheaply!
The lift systems (although not as numerous as the Alps) are up-to-date Poma style lifts that you will find anywhere in the world. If you've read reviews suggesting otherwise then it's because those individuals went before they modernised the lifts.
They are perfectly safe, the piste patrol / mountain rescue is of a very high standard & avalance control is taken as seriously as in the Alps.
The runs are groomed nightly, no different to the Alps!
A beer will cost £2 in Borovets, a beer in Val d'Isere might cost €8.
The adage of "you get what you pay for" certainly rings true here. If you come expecting Alps style run lengths & lift numbers you'll be disappointed.
Come with an open mind & enjoy every minute of it! Or, go to the Alps & get ripped off ... up to you.

it is cheaper in borovets then in the alps but its very very poor quality. do your self a big favour pay a bit more and enjoy your holiday . give borovets a wide bearth and go else ware.

The hired skis and boots themselves were old an unserviced rubbish. We had to complain to get the skis at least sharpened. However, this was probaly due to the Samokov Hotel, where we stayed.
Another major gripe was the poor service and poor quality of the food. The food, generally, is surprisingly awfull. It was cheap, but not cheap enough. £4/5 for an inedible burger is not great.
In Summary, its a cheap and not that cheerful resort. Blackpool with snow. I really wanted to love it and prove the Alpine snobs wrong. However, it is not a patch on the traditional Alpine resorts.
Good value does not just mean cheap.
